R-5 Windows
The US Department of Energy recognize that windows and doors have traditionally been a large source of heat loss within buildings. To achieve greater energy reduction, the Department of Energy is encouraging manufacturers to offer higher performance windows, beyond what is now the levels for an Energy Star rated product - from R-3 to R-5 - resulting in 40% reductions in energy loss through windows. Recognizing that increasing performance from R-3 to R-5 currently results in higher costs, the Building Technologies Program of the Department of Energy is employing the following strategy:
- issuing production engineering awards to window manufacturers
- organizing a volume purchase program for economies of scale
- increasing awareness by establishing more stringent ENERGY STAR criteria
